A student only requires a prompt to complete their assignment on any topic. All they are required to do is fill in a prompt and boom, there it is. A task that would otherwise take up three hours of time can be completed by AI within a matter of seconds. So why write? Even if a student does eventually decide to create a paragraph, based solely on their their imagination, why spend the their early childhood years learning to write?
Firstly, effective communication is an important skill. Good writing can help brush up on a person's communication skills, writing skills in the digital age are still remain of importance for multiple reasons. The essence of language is communication. It is to convey a message or ideas. This is a skill required in ones day to day life. AI may be able to write the messages and essays for one. But it cannot communicate with employers, teachers and bosses. Hence, the habit of writing polishes ones communication skills.
Secondly, writing requires thinking, a skill that makes a person self-sufficient. The frequent use of AI has made students dependable on it. Writing on one hand promotes independent thinking, creativity and imagination. It makes them think ahead.
Thirdly, it is true that AI can provide better answers than most students can, as the writing proficiency of Chat GPT is almost amazing. Although, students can take up pointers from the essays and and use it to develop their own write-ups. This activity can help them boost their confidence in building their skills with a little help and teach them how to develop and present their thoughts. By writing around the structures of an AI generated piece, they can also practise the habit of writing better than AI.
Next, communication skills and Chat GPT don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. As mentioned above, being dependent on Chat GPT can adversely affect ones communication, although practicing writing can help develop their problem-solving and develop creativity. They reflect on a persons individuality and personality. Essays written by AI are all same. Hence, they are easier to spot too! For instance most college applications and interview require a candidate to present themselves. This presentation comes with self reflection developed from the habit of writing.
While AI has its own advantages, it cannot replace the authenticity and the self-satisfaction of that of a written paragraph. While writing in the age of chat bots has become more competitive, it is still advisable as a habit that promotes individuality, creativity and overall self growth.
