OVERCOMING THE CONFORMATION BIAS

Confirmation is the greatest killers of our personal growth. At all times we expect ourselves to do what society is doing. The most recent activity a society indulges in is what we find ourselves doing too.  Be it picking up on a new clothing trend or participating in political movements. This confirmation takes away one’s ability to think with the mind of their own and decide for themselves if something is right or wrong.

For students, confirmation takes up a lot of their ability to study subjects and courses that they themselves like and do the ones that everyone wants them to. Confirmation comes from any side peers, friends, social media etc. Confirming to someone else’s idea of a career, success, smartness can leave a train of negative ripple on the student’s life. They often end up selecting their careers based on this confirmation, this career is right for you, this is not. Being most vulnerable to the conformation bias, here is how students can protect themselves against this confirmation

1.       Ask why? A student must ask why they are expected to set eyes for a particular career. Why are they being constantly advised to do the same? How is it better? What are its Additional perks?

2.       Ask yourself: Does the thought of becoming a certain kind of professional excite you enough? Do you like the subjects that the particular career choice brings with itself? Are you prepared to study those subjects?

3.       Do your own study: Doing research of your own is of utmost importance as it can provide you with a more in-depth and meaningful information free from any bias.

4.       Consult a student expert: For a student there are multiple experts they can consult to. Be it your  teachers, parents, mentors or visit coursefinder. CourseFinder helps students with skill assessment and student career planning.
