The Scale and Popularity of Micro-Credentials: How Short Duration Certifications Are Likely to Play a Large Role in Education Innovation.

In order to get a job, a traditional degree has always been considered the most important requirement. Meanwhile, specific educational industries are developing exponentially which has shifted the focus towards micro-credentials. Unlike traditional degrees which take years to complete, micro-credentials are specialized online courses which can be achieved in a few weeks or months.

Significant employers like Google, IBM, and Microsoft have already replaced degrees with certifications for more intricate levels of employment within their business. Additionally, the average consumer is educated through platforms such as Coursera, Udacity, or edX which give educational freedom.

With the emergence of skill-based hiring, employers have switched towards focusing on practical work. In addition, the competition remains fierce and therefore micro-credentials assist people in continuously improving their skills. Particular fields such as AI, digital marketing, or data science call for an increased supply of these certifications.

Nonetheless, there are certain challenges present. Are micro-credentials intended to replace traditional methods of schooling or simply serve as a supplement? Do micro-credentials have the same value as a degree from a university? While they enable cost effectiveness and flexibility, they fail to include depth like a full degree does.
